Visa Appointment Berlin: LEA, Embassy, and What to Do When Slots Are Gone

How to book a Berlin visa appointment at the LEA (Landesamt für Einwanderung) or German embassy abroad: timing, documents, emergency options, and avoiding the most common rejections.

Published June 8, 2026

A visa appointment in Berlin can mean two completely different things: an appointment at the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA) if you''re already in Germany and need a residence permit, or an appointment at a German embassy abroad if you''re applying for an entry visa. Both are notoriously hard to book, and the documents required are different.

This guide covers both paths, the most reliable booking tactics for Berlin specifically, and what to do when no appointments are available before your deadline.

Which appointment do you actually need?

You''re outside Germany applying to come here: → Book at the German embassy or consulate in your country via auswaertiges-amt.de

You''re already in Germany on a visa, residence permit, or visa-free entry: → Book at the LEA (Berlin''s immigration office) via service.berlin.de

You entered Germany visa-free (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.) and want to apply for a residence permit: → You can apply at the LEA without leaving — book the appointment immediately on arrival.

LEA appointment booking (Berlin)

The Landesamt für Einwanderung handles all residence permits, Blue Cards, settlement permits, and family reunifications for Berlin residents.

Booking URL: service.berlin.de → search for your service type.

When new slots appear:

  • Tuesday and Thursday mornings around 8:00–9:00 — the LEA''s main release pattern
  • Occasional batch releases when staff process bulk cancellations (no fixed time)
  • Last-minute cancellations appear randomly all day — refresh between 14:00–16:00

Tactics:

  1. Don''t filter by location — the LEA has multiple buildings (Friedrich-Krause-Ufer, Keplerstraße, Tempelhof) and you can be assigned to any.
  2. Bookmark the direct service URL for your permit type. Generic searches add 30 seconds of clicking that loses you the slot.
  3. Prepare your application in another tab — once you select a slot you have 5 minutes to confirm.
  4. Email the LEA in parallel. If you''re close to a deadline, write to ABH@lea.berlin.de explaining your situation. They sometimes offer slots not on the public calendar.

If no slots exist before your permit expires:

You have a legal right to a Fiktionsbescheinigung — a certificate that extends your legal status while you wait. Request it by email:

Subject: Antrag auf Fiktionsbescheinigung — [Your Name], geb. [DOB]

Mit freundlichen Grüßen [Your Name]

Attach scans of your passport and current permit. You should receive a response within 2–3 weeks; the Fiktionsbescheinigung is then issued at a brief in-person appointment.

Documents for an LEA appointment

Bring everything in original plus one copy:

  • Passport (valid for the full duration of the requested permit)
  • Current residence permit / visa
  • Anmeldebestätigung (registration certificate)
  • Biometric photo (35×45 mm)
  • Health insurance proof — German statutory or recognized private
  • Employment contract or freelance proof of income
  • Rental contract + Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
  • Specific extras depending on permit type (degree certificate for Blue Card, business plan for §21 freelance, etc.)
  • €100 fee, payable by card

A missing document almost always means rebooking — which can mean another 4–8 weeks.

German embassy appointments abroad

If you''re applying from outside Germany:

  • Find your embassy at auswaertiges-amt.de
  • Booking systems vary by country — some use VFS Global, others book directly
  • Wait times: 2 weeks (London, Tokyo) to 12+ months (Istanbul, New Delhi, Lagos)

For long waits in high-demand consulates:

  • Apply at a neighboring consulate if you have legal residence there
  • Use the Job Seeker Visa route if eligible — sometimes faster than employment visa
  • For Blue Card holders, ask your German employer to send a Vorabzustimmung request to the Agentur für Arbeit — this can move you to a priority queue at some consulates

At the appointment — the language problem

LEA officers in Berlin speak some English, but technical conversations (denial reasons, document discrepancies, appeal options) often switch to German. You have the right to:

  • Bring a German-speaking person at no charge
  • Use a translation app live — AmtSprache translates the officer''s German into English instantly and speaks your English replies back as German, eliminating the awkward typing pauses
  • Request a written decision if anything is denied — you then have 30 days to file a formal Widerspruch (objection)

Never sign a document you don''t fully understand. If pressured, say:

"Ich möchte das zuerst übersetzen lassen, bevor ich unterschreibe." (I''d like to have this translated before I sign.)

Common rejections and how to fix them

"Your salary doesn''t meet the Blue Card threshold." 2026 thresholds: €48,300/year general, €43,759 for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, STEM). Below this, apply for a regular work permit (§18a/b) instead.

"Your degree isn''t recognized." Check anabin.kmk.org. If your university or program isn''t listed as H+/equivalent, you need a formal evaluation (Zeugnisbewertung) from the Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) — €200 and 3 months.

"Your health insurance isn''t accepted." Most expat travel policies are rejected. You need statutory (Krankenkasse) or recognized substitutive private insurance.

"Your Anmeldung is older than 6 months." Re-register if you''ve moved. Some LEA officers also reject Anmeldungen newer than 14 days — they want proof you''re settled.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get an LEA appointment in Berlin?

Anywhere from 1 week (lucky) to 4 months (typical). Slots are released Tuesday and Thursday mornings around 8:00. If you have less than 8 weeks before your permit expires, request a Fiktionsbescheinigung by email immediately.

Can I work while waiting for my visa renewal?

Only if your current permit or Fiktionsbescheinigung explicitly says "Erwerbstätigkeit gestattet" (employment permitted). Without that line, you must pause work — many employers will accommodate this for a known LEA delay.

What''s the difference between LEA and Ausländerbehörde?

LEA is just Berlin''s rebranded Ausländerbehörde — same function, newer name. Other cities still use "Ausländerbehörde" or "Einwanderungsbehörde."

Can I apply for a residence permit if I entered Germany visa-free?

Yes, if you''re a national of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, or Israel. Apply at the LEA within your 90-day visa-free stay; you can remain in Germany while the application is processed.
